USING FAUX FLORAL AND GREENS IN THE FARMHOUSE CAN BE A CHALLENGE. HERE I SHOW YOU HOW I USE THEM TO FRESHEN UP MY HOME AS SPRING APPROACHES.
I have to admit, I have never been real big on using faux floral and greens. I guess I have too many memories of the years when faux floral and greenery was plastic and….ugly.
And, I am an avid gardener with an acre of beautiful roses, perennials, annuals and shrubs at my disposal for fresh bouquets from spring through fall. And I even use many fresh greens through the winter and bring in cherry branches and forsythia in the spring to force. Fresh just can’t be beat!
So why am I writing about using faux floral and greens in the farmhouse?
I guess I just can’t wait until May for fresh floral in the house! I want beautiful greens in my house during all seasons…not just gardening season.
And, I want the feel of living things in the house without killing them. (Did I mention I have a very brown thumb when it comes to houseplants?) I’ve had high hopes when bringing home a house plant. But it never seems to work like I envision and they end up forgotten and sick most of the time. And who has time to water plants inside, anyway? Not me.
I also don’t want to spend a fortune on cut bouquets. Yes, there are some pretty cheap flowers at Costco and warehouse stores, but even that adds up quickly and has never been a part of my budget. And as beautiful as they may be, they usually just don’t have the farm fresh look I enjoy.
And lastly, faux has come a long way and is now so REAL looking. Some even feel real.
So, I have to admit that I have been using faux floral and greens in my home over the past few years. They make our home fresh and inviting for guests and lift my heart when I can’t walk out to the yard and cut a bouquet.
How I use faux floral and greens in my home
Use vintage and antique containers
Throw out those glass vases you have from store bought flower arrangements. Instead use crocks, galvanized or white enamel buckets, white pitchers, wire baskets, wooden bowls or boxes, rustic woven baskets or totes, antique dishes like gravy boats and candy dishes and of course Mason jars. If using clear jars or containers be sure that the faux stems are very real or hidden behind another object.
Keep it simple and use only one color of flower
The farmhouse life style is simple and rudimentary. It doesn’t need fanfare. In our farmhouse life is busy…I need my greens and floral to be calming and serene. For me, a single color arrangement does that best.
Simplify by using only one kind of plant or flower in each container
Again, keeping it to one kind of plant or flower at a time keeps things from being too busy. With fresh flowers from the garden you can mix several kinds of greens or flowers with success, but I have found with faux, one kind is best. I like to think about when grandma went out and found the daisies blooming and would cut a whole bouquet of just that one flower. Simple. Beautiful. Easy.
Use greens for filler
Using greens as filler will transform a display and make it come to life. Rather than whole plants, I prefer to buy multiple picks so I can choose how full I want the display.
Choose floral and greens that are season-less
This is just a convenience and budget choice for me. I don’t have the time or money to be constantly changing my green fillers or flowers. And I don’t want to store a lot of off-season decor. It is ok to have that special bouquet of tulips or roses if you really want them out every spring, but don’t go overboard on them unless you really want to store them the other 9 months of the year.
I choose one beautiful seasonal bouquet for a prominent place in my house like my dining table or kitchen island. Then I use season-less greens like ferns, eucalyptus and boxwoods to fill in, that can stay out almost all year.

I love my little radishes each spring and these darling carrots would also be super sweet with vintage garden tools! Too cute!
